Five For Friday

This is the first time I've linked up with Doodle Bugs for her Five for Friday. Here are 5 randoms from my week:

1. Is my cover blown?

I've blogged before about my "secret identity" as Down Under Teacher. I know some teacher bloggers have their name and face out there and it's no secret (and that's great) but I'm exactly the opposite! In the last two weeks 2 other teachers at my school have asked me if I am Down Under Teacher... I couldn't lie but had to ask that they keep it to themselves! Thanks ladies!

2.
Last week (and continued this week) we had our first go at math rotations with a Valentine's Day theme. It .... didn't go to well. Well, that isn't entirely true. Most kids got the activities but they were just too noisy. They know that I can't stand noise! A soft hum of activity is great, but the really loud excited whoops when they win a game or talking really loudly so I can follow their conversation from across the room just drives me nuts! I can't seem to focus when there's too much noise and I get really frustrated because I can't think properly. So, we're going to have to work on that!
Skip Counting and 1-120 puzzles from Katie King, Even and Odd from Lory Evans.

3.
This year I'm teaming up CAFE with beanie babies. So far I've introduced Eagle Eye, Stretchy Snake and Chunky Monkey. My firsties LOVE them and are excited to tell me whenever they've used a strategy.

I bought Chunky from Big W (along with a few others for $2), the rest of the 2 bags of beanies I've bought came from the U.S.

4. To help us with the Chunky Monkey strategy, I made up these long strips of cardboard and wrote a whole heap of word families on them. This week we were working on r-blends so I also made up cards for tr, cr, gr, fr, br and dr. We simply move the blends down the word families and chunk the word. We then give a thumbs up for a real work and a thumbs down for a silly word.

5. I'm lovin my new book boxes and whisper phones (sent over from the U.S. - I'm crazy I know!). They just look so pretty in the shelves! I got the boxes and phones from Really Good Stuff.

This is what the back of the room looks like now. I used to have a whole class area but it was too small and not that functional so I got rid of it.
I've since labelled all the Readers boxes and book boxes.

Sale Purchases!

Sorry for the longest absence I've had on here yet - over 2 weeks - WOWZAS! And I've felt it too - time sure does drag on when day and night morph into one sleepy haze.

I have been very busy with my new group of firsties! Despite my initial worries and reluctance, I've found Grade 1 to be quite a good fit for me (but that could be because I have such a great little group!).

I haven't posted since the big TpT sale so I thought I'd show you some of my great buys!

I'm into my third week of using Jen Jones and Katherine Zotovich's (from Hello Two Peas in a Pod) Phonological Awareness Curriculum. I think I have all the sets they've put out so far. It is so easy to implement and the kids enjoy it too.
I spent most of my money on cute clip art, borders and frames. I'm loving these packs from:
I also bought a few cute things from Mel at Graphics from the Pond and From the Pond . Super cute!
I totally rearranged my room after 2 weeks of school - I found that it just wasn't working. I don't think it looks as good now, but it is much more functional. I'll be back soon with some pics.

First Week and Sale

Sorry I didn't get my Day 4 plays up, I didn't have any reason to make them. You know how it is, things end up taking a bit longer than expected or you throw other things in on the spur of the moment, so on Friday I ended up completing the things left over from earlier in the week. I did add one activity though - making Peacemaker/Peacebreaker Davids - I LOVE the David books by David Shannon and the kids enjoy making the craft on Friday. The templates can be picked up in Julie Lee's TpT store.

I had a pretty good week with my new firsties. They are little chatterboxes though and I have one howler crier.  He howled cried most of the day every day. As soon as he  walked in the door, he cried. He made a mistake in his work and needed an eraser, he howled cried. He didn't know how to spell a word he howled cried. By Friday he was better though and he actually raised his hand and said he couldn't cut very well while making our David's (earlier in the week he would have just sat there and howled cried) and with encouragement he had a go and didn't break down. The poor thing is new the school and country but he has done 2 years of school in New Zealand. Hopefully next week is better!

I've also got 2 special little cherubs who are both intellectually impaired and one also has global development disorder, so basically his whole development is severely delayed. I've been told he is operating at around a 2 year olds development. I have lots of classroom support and he is withdrawn for an hour 2 days a week and 1.5 hours another 2 days, but I also have a lot of time without any aide support. I look forward to learning how to accommodate his needs this year. If you have any suggestions, I 'd love to hear from you!

You've probably also heard of the TpT sale on the 3rd. My store is 20% off and you can enter code SUPER at checkout to receive an additional 10% off the reduce price. I'm also running a 20% off sale at Teachers Notebook. Check out the My Products link at the top of my blog to check out most of my products.
